Tap to Pay

Accept contactless cards and digital wallets right on an iPhone or Android phone with the Resytech app -- no card reader needed.

With Tap to Pay, a phone running the Resytech app works as the card reader. Customers tap a contactless credit or debit card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, or another digital wallet against the phone, and the payment is processed through your connected Stripe account like any other card payment. There is no extra hardware to buy, charge, or pair.

Resytech supports both Tap to Pay on iPhone and Tap to Pay on Android. Card reading happens in the phone's secure hardware -- card numbers are never visible to Resytech or stored on the device, and while a payment is being read, the payment screen blocks screenshots and screen recording.

On Android, the device must be unmodified (not rooted, developer options off) and the app needs location permission -- Stripe requires knowing where payments occur. The app asks for it the first time you set up or take a Tap to Pay payment.

Enabling Tap to Pay

Tap to Pay is a plugin, enabled per location:

  1. In the dashboard, open Plugins > Browse Plugins and install Tap to Pay for your location
  2. iPhone only: an administrator accepts Apple's Terms & Conditions on an iPhone with the Resytech app. This is a one-time step that requires signing in with an Apple ID -- the acceptance covers your whole company, every operator, and every device. Android phones have no extra step: they're ready as soon as the plugin is enabled
  3. After setup, the app shows a short "How to Tap" guide, and the phone finishes configuring in the background (a progress indicator is shown the first time on iPhone)

Staff who are not administrators cannot accept Apple's Terms & Conditions. If iPhone setup hasn't been completed, they'll see a message asking them to contact an administrator.

You can also complete or revisit setup any time under Company Settings > Terminals, which shows live status for the current phone and lets you replay the "How to Tap" guide.

Taking a payment

Once enabled, Tap to Pay appears as the first payment option everywhere you take payments in person on a phone running the Resytech app:

  • Booking payments -- balances, deposits, and day-of charges (Add Payment on a booking)
  • Point of sale -- walk-up orders and retail
  • Incident charges -- damage and fee collection
  • Deposits and holds -- card-present authorization holds

To take a payment:

  1. Choose Tap to Pay as the payment method
  2. Present the phone to the customer
  3. On iPhone, the customer holds their card, or their device, at the top of the iPhone over the contactless symbol for a few seconds. On Android, a full-screen prompt shows exactly where on the phone to tap
  4. When the screen confirms the read, the transaction is processed
  5. The outcome -- approved or declined -- is shown, and the booking balance or order updates automatically

PIN entry

For some cards, the customer may be asked to enter their PIN on the phone to approve the payment.

  • On iPhone, the PIN screen is provided by iOS and includes an accessibility button with assistive options, such as spoken and haptic PIN entry, for customers who need them.
  • On Android, the PIN pad appears at a random position on the screen on purpose -- that is a security feature. PIN entry is unavailable while screen recording, screen overlays, or developer options are active; turn those off if a PIN payment is refused.

Receipts

After every payment -- approved or declined -- you can email the customer a receipt or declined notice on the spot. The email address is prefilled from the booking when one is available.

Fees

Tap to Pay payments are processed at your Stripe in-person card rates, plus Stripe's per-authorization fee for Tap to Pay transactions. The exact rates depend on your Stripe account agreement.
